As can be seen by the photo below, work has commenced on repairing our 'Toad' brake van.

A.V.R Toad brake van 68784.

This brake van was built in Lot 1277 between 1934 – 1943 as part of number series 68701 – 31 / 33 – 68790.  To narrow the build date down further there is a hand painted date on the solebar that indicates this brakevan was painted at Sn (Swindon) on the 25/10/1939.

Within Lot 1277, numbers 68753 – 90 carried a white S (Other brake vans carried a white five pointed star) below the allocation to indicate that they were ballasted up to 25 tons and were fitted with screw couplings as they were considered suitable for use on partly vacuum fitted freight trains which ran at higher speeds.
